The Flight of Pony Baker
Customer Service. In The Spotlight. Shop Our Brands. Pony lives in the Boy's Town with his mother, father, and five sisters, whom his mother always wants him to play with. Pony's mother is very overprotective of Pony, which makes her a bad mother when it comes to having fun. Pony's father has done some things that have given Pony the right to run away as well, but it seems to Pony that they were mostly things that his mother had put his father up to, and that his father would not have been half as bad if his mother had not influenced him.
One day however, Pony almost loses all his patience after the way his father reacts to Pony being pushed down from third reader to second reader at school. That morning, Pony is asked by his teacher to read to the class, but because it is hot and because Pony was being lazy, he read very poorly despite the fact that Pony is actually a very good reader.
His performance causes the teacher to push him down to the second reader.
Before class is dismissed, Pony gathers his books and walks out of school towards home. His father advises him to go back to school that afternoon, which continues to upset Pony.

It is perhaps in this role that he had his greatest influence. Throughout the story, the rascally lad attempts to escape from his family home. Naturally curious but also mischievous, the young Pony feels oppressed by his overprotective mother. Desiring freedom and adventure, he dreams of escaping his family life and school for good. Eventually, Pony gains the encouragement and assistance of his friends, who are amused by his predicament.
The members of the group playfully pressure Pony into going through with his ambition, and take increasing interest in his attempts. Throughout this whimsical story, Pony attempts to escape home with a passing company of Native Americans, a circus, and down the nearby river on a raft. We are left in suspense; each time, it appears that Pony is going to succeed in absconding the town only for him to be thwarted by sheer happenstance.
He wagged his head, and said that he knew, and then they dared him to tell whose patch it was; and all at once he said it was Bunty Williams's, and dared them to come and get the melons with him. None of the boys in the Boy's Town would take a dare, and so they set off with Jim Leonard, one sunny Saturday morning in September.
Some of the boys had their arms round one another's necks, talking as loud as they could into one another's faces, and some whooping and holloing, and playing Indian, and some throwing stones and scaring cats. They had nearly as many dogs as there were boys, and there were pretty nearly all the boys in the neighborhood. There seemed to be thirty or forty of them, they talked so loud and ran round so, but perhaps there were only ten or eleven.
Hen Billard was along, and so were Piccolo Wright and Archie Hawkins, and then a great lot of little fellows. Pony Baker was not quite a little fellow in age; and there was something about him that always made the big boys let him go with their crowd.
